A Taste of “Cupcakes and Cashmere”

Who could say no to Cupcakes and Cashmere?  Filled with ideas on living a stylish existence, blogger Emily Schuman’s new book has tips that, slightly tweaked, fit right into a Greenista’s lifestyle.

Inspired by her successful blog of the same name, Cupcakes and Cashmere presents personal style, home décor and entertaining lessons season by season.  For example, in the fall there are projects like reupholstering a bench and bringing natural autumnal decorations (pinecone nametags!) into the home.  Or in the spring, Emily provides ideas for organizing your closet and making a killer Bloody Mary.

Now, Cupcakes and Cashmere is not billed as a green lifestyle book, but over the years I’ve come to learn that being eco doesn’t necessarily mean hemp t-shirts and pricey reclaimed furniture made by an artisan halfway across the world.  Rather, common sense and putting a little more effort into day-to-day life is what makes the difference – and Cupcakes and Cashmere doesn’t disappoint on this front.

Emily’s book is full of advice on what to do with flea market finds, made-from-scratch recipes and repurposing your wardrobe – all hallmarks of an eco lifestyle.  Sure there are a few things like food dye in her mint chip ice cream (just nix it and infuse your cream with fresh mint leaves for a day or two instead) and unnatural beauty product recommendations, but substitutions are easy.  It’s her fun and fresh ideas that shine through in the end, no matter what end of the green spectrum you’re on.
