Roses Aren’t Just for Valentine’s Day

Want to calm anxiety?  Soothe worry lines?  Taking a stroll around the rows of blooming roses in the San Francisco Rose Garden is a good idea, but did you know there’s more to those pretty petals than meets the eye?  Roses contain numerous therapeutic properties good for your mood, health and complexion.

Rose essence has been revered and used for centuries to alleviate depression, headaches and even asthma.  When utilized for skincare, rose infusions help calm and brighten the skin.  And since our emotions tend to show up on our faces – in the form of wrinkles, spots or breakouts – the healing aromatic is an effective stress reliever for both body and mind.

To reap the benefits of the flower of love, try sipping on organic rose tea throughout the day.  Numi has a delicate white tea leaf and rosebud blend that is fragrant and made from fair-trade and organic certified ingredients.  It instantly puts you in a peaceful frame of mind and hydrates your skin.

Incorporating rose into your beauty routine is simple, too.  My latest natural fragrance obsession is Lotus Wei’s Infinite Love transformative perfume.  It has such a beautiful and uplifting scent, like an expensive bouquet of flowers – and I’ve gotten tons of compliments when I wear it!  Infused with rose, red mandarin and honey, the scent is 100 percent natural and free of any synthetic chemicals or toxic ingredients.

Into DIY?  Make a refreshing homemade rose toner.  Fill a small pot with 2-3 cups water.  When the water begins to boil, remove it from the heat and steep three tablespoons of dried organic rose petals for about 35 minutes.  Strain the rose petals and pour the rose water into a sterilized glass jar.  It’ll keep in the fridge for about a month.  I typically pour small amounts of rose water into a portable spray bottle throughout the week and add 3 drops each of lavender and chamomile essential oils for additional health benefits.  No matter how crazy your day gets, you’ll always be able to stop and smell the roses!
