Date Night: Dinner at Local Mission Eatery

“Entirely local, humane and housemade” – it’s tagline says it all.  Local Mission Eatery takes supporting local farms and food producers to a whole new level, sourcing everything from California for its quirky and tasty menu.  If you’re looking for the best ingredients our state has to offer prepared in interesting ways, it’s here.  Plus lots of great San Francisco-based companies are also included on the menu, so you can get a taste of uber-local beer (Almanac Beer, Anchor Brewing), wine (Sutton Cellars), coffee (Four Barrel) or tea (Red Blossom).

The restaurant prides itself not only on quality, but also transparency.  I recommend asking for a seat around the open kitchen island, where you can watch the chef prepare your meal from start to finish and get up-close-and-personal with your meal ingredients.  For example, the last time I was there with my boyfriend, hog cuts were marinating on the counter.  And if you’re so inclined, you can sneak a peek at the windowed walk-in refrigerator to see what other dishes the restaurant is cooking up.

The small plates on the menu – which change seasonally – make dinner fun to share. And between courses, browse the eatery’s mini library of cookbooks for unique cooking techniques and recipes.

Even though I’m a pescatarian and my boyfriend is an omnivore, we were able to agree on and enjoy a nice selection of dishes.  Here’s what we ordered during date night and highly recommend:

Sunchokes with curry aioli and charred onions

Fried sweet potatoes with honey and chili

Roasted butternut squash with apples, chicory, yogurt, caramelized honey vinegar and chickweed

Polenta cooked in whey with poached farm egg, goat gouda, smoked braised greens and ricotta

Braised Pork Shoulder with apples, kohlrabi greens, herb roasted potatoes and boudin noir

And for dessert…Chocolate Nougatine with extra virgin olive oil, lime and fleur de sel
– made by Local Mission Eatery’s pastry partner Knead Patisserie

For two people, expect to pay around $80 if you plan on having 3-4 small plates, wine and dessert.  It’s not cheap, but you can rest assured you are getting the freshest and best local ingredients possible in your delicious meal!

Local Mission Eatery is located at 3111 24th Street in San Francisco.  Call 415.655.3422 or visit www.localmissioneatery.com for reservations and information.
