Get All Wrapped Up

Yoga class?  Check.  Raw juice made from organic greens?  Check.  Same old, same old detox routine?  Check.  Like every Greenista, I have my tried-and-true energizing routine to keep my body healthy, but every now and then it’s fun to throw something novel into the mix.  For me, this came in the form of an organic body wrap at Avra Organic Spa near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.

Despite being located in tourist central, the spa manages to distance itself from all the commotion and, once inside, you are truly enveloped in a calming and healing ambience.  After enjoying some hot tea in the waiting area, I was whisked away to a room that was strangely simple and opulent at the same time – minimalist furnishings with an impressive chandelier in the middle and baroque-esque wallpaper.  I later learned that the room was accented with recycled and sustainable materials, which the owner tried to incorporate throughout the spa. Next I stripped down to my bathing suit bottoms and the spa specialist, Meghan, wrapped warm herb-soaked bandages firmly around different areas of my body.  I hobbled over to a massage table and was wrapped in a silk sheet (much healthier and eco-friendly than other spas that use plastic for this step) and space blanket, and then covered by a heating pad.

Now, if you’re claustrophobic, this treatment might not be for you.  At first the mummy feeling was a little uncomfortable, but I slowly relaxed into it and ended up falling asleep for the remainder of the 40 minutes.  The mixture of organic detoxing and inflammation-reducing herbs – Lavender, Devil’s Club, Cayenne, Seaweed, Marshmallow Root and Green Tea, to name a few – made their way into my skin and, surprisingly, my skin glowed and looked firmer once the bandages were taken off.  And this wasn’t just loss of water weight – my skin stayed that way for the next few days and any minor skin irritation or marks I had faded.

So if you want to spice up your detox routine and have some extra cash to spare (the treatment Is $99 plus tip), I say go for it.  Your body – and health – will thank you.
